The China Insights Non-Resident Fellowship Program offers a unique opportunity for professionals, academics, researchers, policymakers, and industry experts from around the world to contribute to high-quality analysis of China’s rapidly evolving economic, industrial, technological, and policy landscape. Designed as a fully remote program, the fellowship enables participants to engage with China-related developments while maintaining their existing professional commitments and responsibilities. 

Through a combination of independent research, publication opportunities, expert engagement, and participation in a global network of China-focused specialists, the program provides a platform for fellows to deepen their expertise, expand their professional networks, and contribute to informed international dialogue on China. The fellowship typically runs for six to twelve months and requires a flexible commitment of approximately four to eight hours per month.

Program Objectives

The primary objective of the program is to promote evidence-based analysis and informed discussion of China’s economic transformation and its implications for global markets, industries, and public policy. The fellowship seeks to foster collaboration between academia, business, and government while creating opportunities for meaningful cross-sector dialogue and knowledge exchange. 

By bringing together experts from diverse backgrounds and geographies, China Insights aims to build an international community dedicated to understanding China’s role in the global economy and supporting informed decision-making on China-related issues. 

Fellows may focus their research, publications, and engagement activities on one or more of China Insights’ core Areas of Expertise. These domains reflect the industries, policy developments, and strategic themes shaping China’s economic transformation and its growing influence on global business, technology, investment, and international affairs.

  • Advanced Manufacturing China remains the world’s largest manufacturing economy and continues to upgrade its industrial base through automation, digitalization, smart manufacturing, industrial clustering, and advanced production technologies. Research in this domain examines industrial policy, supply chain transformation, manufacturing competitiveness, Industry 4.0 developments, and the evolution of China’s high-value manufacturing ecosystem. Fellows explore how these developments are reshaping global production networks and industrial competitiveness. 
  • Automotive & Electric Vehicles China has emerged as the world’s largest automotive market and a global leader in electric mobility. This research domain focuses on electric vehicles, battery technologies, autonomous driving, intelligent transportation systems, mobility innovation, automotive supply chains, and regulatory developments. Fellows analyze the competitive dynamics, technological advancements, and international implications of China’s rapidly evolving automotive sector. 
  • Aviation & Aerospace China’s aviation and aerospace industries are undergoing significant expansion and modernization. Research areas include civil aviation policy, airport infrastructure development, aerospace manufacturing, commercial aircraft programs, unmanned aerial systems, low-altitude economy initiatives, and international aviation cooperation. Fellows assess the strategic importance of these sectors within China’s broader industrial and technological ambitions. 
  • Energy Transition & Sustainability China plays a central role in the global transition toward a lower-carbon economy. Research focuses on renewable energy deployment, carbon neutrality policies, industrial decarbonization, ESG developments, green finance, energy security, hydrogen technologies, energy storage, and sustainability-related regulatory frameworks. Fellows examine how environmental priorities are influencing industrial development, investment decisions, and international competitiveness. 
  • Entrepreneurship & Innovation Innovation has become a key driver of China’s economic development strategy. This domain explores entrepreneurship ecosystems, start-up development, innovation policy, venture capital, technology commercialization, innovation clusters, and emerging industries. Fellows analyze how innovation is transforming business models and creating new opportunities across multiple sectors of the Chinese economy. 
  • Financial Services & Investment China’s financial sector continues to evolve through regulatory reform, capital market development, financial innovation, and increasing international integration. Research areas include banking, insurance, asset management, fintech, venture capital, foreign investment, capital markets, and investment policy. Fellows examine the opportunities and challenges facing domestic and international investors operating within China’s financial ecosystem. 
  •  Healthcare & Pharmaceuticals China’s healthcare sector is undergoing rapid transformation driven by demographic change, healthcare reform, technological innovation, and growing demand for advanced medical services. Research topics include healthcare policy, pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, medical devices, digital health, healthcare investment, and public health developments. Fellows explore how regulatory reforms and market expansion are creating new opportunities within one of China’s most strategically important sectors. 
  • International Trade & Global Economic Relations As one of the world’s largest trading nations, China continues to play a central role in shaping global trade and investment flows. Research in this domain focuses on international trade policy, supply chains, market access, trade agreements, foreign direct investment, economic diplomacy, the Belt and Road Initiative, and China’s economic relations with key regions and trading partners. Fellows analyze how geopolitical developments and policy changes affect global business operations and investment strategies. 
  • Organization, Management & Corporate Development China’s evolving business environment presents unique organizational and management challenges and opportunities. Research topics include corporate governance, leadership, talent management, human resources, organizational transformation, foreign investment management, finance and accounting, and cross-cultural business practices. Fellows examine how organizations adapt to China’s changing economic, regulatory, and competitive landscape. 
  • Technology, Artificial Intelligence & Data Technology continues to play a central role in China’s economic modernization and global competitiveness. This domain focuses on artificial intelligence, semiconductors, digital transformation, data governance, cybersecurity, cloud computing, robotics, advanced computing, and emerging technologies. Fellows analyze the policy frameworks, technological innovations, and strategic implications driving China’s rise as a global technology leader. 
  • Crosscutting Policy and Geopolitical Themes In addition to sector-specific research, fellows are encouraged to explore broader themes that influence China’s development and international engagement. These include macroeconomic developments, industrial policy, regulatory and policy reform, geopolitical developments, market and industry intelligence, investment environments, and strategic risk assessment. Such cross-cutting themes provide important context for understanding the opportunities and challenges facing organizations operating in or engaging with China. 

The fellowship combines academic rigor with practical policy and business insights through a variety of research and engagement activities. 

  • Research and Analysis Fellows conduct independent research, monitor policy and regulatory developments, analyze industry trends and market dynamics, and produce original analytical content relevant to their area of expertise. 
  • Publications and Thought Leadership Participants contribute research reports, policy briefs, industry intelligence reports, commentary articles, opinion pieces, and webinar presentations. Selected contributions may be published through China Insights platforms, providing fellows with a valuable opportunity to showcase their expertise to an international audience. 
  • Expert Roundtables and Policy Dialogues Fellows are invited to participate in virtual expert discussions, industry briefings, research workshops, peer-review sessions, and policy dialogues. These engagements encourage knowledge exchange and informed discussion among specialists from different sectors and regions. 
  • Speaking and Public Engagement Participants may present research findings, participate in webinars, moderate panel discussions, contribute to conferences, and engage with broader professional audiences on China-related developments. 
  • Collaborative Research Projects The program encourages cooperation through joint research initiatives, multi-author publications, sector-focused intelligence reports, and international collaboration projects that bring together experts from different disciplines and geographies.

To accommodate different professional backgrounds and objectives, participants may choose from several fellowship pathways. 

    • Research Fellow Track Key responsibilities include research, commentary writing, knowledge dissemination, support research projects and publications. Expected annual contributions include 6–8 commentary articles, participation in webinars and panel discussions, support China Insights publications and outreach activities.

    • Associate Fellow Track Key responsibilities include contribution of expert analysis, participate in thematic research initiatives, provide sector-specific insights, support business development and outreach activities. Expected annual contributions include 4–6 analytical articles or policy briefs annually, participation in roundtables, webinars, and expert interviews.

    • Fellow Track Key responsibilities include thought leadership, strategic content development, representation of China Insights at external events, contribution to flagship reports and research projects. Expected annual contributions include 3–4 high-quality articles, participation in executive roundtables, speaking engagements, contribution to research reports and strategic initiatives.

    • Senior Fellow Track Key responsibilities include strategic advisory contributions, mentoring junior fellows, participation in executive-level discussions, institutional representation, contribution to major publications and research direction. Output includes 1–3 strategic publications or executive briefings annually, participation in high-level forums, mentoring activities, advisory support.

The fellowship provides participants with professional recognition, publication opportunities, networking benefits, and ongoing professional development. 

  • Professional Recognition Fellows receive an official appointment as a China Insights Non-Resident Fellow, a fellowship certificate upon successful completion of the program, and a profile listing on the China Insights website.

  • Publication Platform Participants gain access to publication opportunities through China Insights channels, helping increase their visibility among China-focused audiences while strengthening their personal thought leadership profile.

  • International Network Fellows become part of a global network of researchers, industry experts, business leaders, policymakers, and practitioners, creating opportunities for future collaboration and professional engagement.

  • Knowledge Development The program provides ongoing exposure to China-focused research, policy developments, industry intelligence, and expert exchanges, enabling fellows to deepen their sector knowledge and analytical capabilities.

The fellowship is open to academics, researchers, industry specialists, business executives, consultants, policy professionals, journalists, analysts, PhD candidates, and advanced master’s students. 

Successful applicants should demonstrate expertise in a relevant field, strong analytical and writing skills, a genuine interest in China-related developments, and a commitment to objective, evidence-based analysis.

Applicants are invited to submit a detailed Curriculum Vitae outlining their educational background, professional experience, publications, and areas of expertise. 

Candidates should also provide a Statement of Interest of up to 1,000 words describing their motivation for joining the fellowship, research interests, relevant experience, proposed contribution to the program, and long-term professional objectives. 

In addition, applicants should submit a writing sample such as a published article, research paper, policy brief, industry report, or commentary piece.
